Greene Central linebacker coach J.J. Thompson died Friday at Vidant Medical Center of a blood clot at age 23.
The news of his death shocked the school and coaching staff after Thompson indicated he was feeling positive heading into cancer treatments earlier in the week. Thompson, who graduated from Greene Central in 2007, was prepping for chemotherapy after doctors found a tumor just last week.
After the blood clot occurred, Thompson never recovered.
