Editorial: End redistricting practices

It can never be too soon to wipe the stain of racial gerrymandering from North Carolina’s laws and relieve the people of this state of a practice that both parties have shamefully used for political advantage.

Nevertheless, after a three-judge federal court panel overturned the state’s congressional redistricting law and rejected a request to stay its order, attorneys for Gov. Pat McCrory and other state officials filed an emergency request with the U.S.Supreme Court. Timely action on that request is threatened by the passing Saturday of Justice Antonin Scalia.

The federal judges ordered the state to redraw its 1st and 12th Congressional districts by Feb. 19 because race was a predominant factor in drawing the lines. The 1st District includes parts of Pitt County and is represented by G.K Butterfield,
