Editorial: The coal ash debacle

Should Greenville Utilities customers foot the bill for the unnecessary Dan River coal ash debacle created by Duke Energy?

All things considered, the answer is, yes. But how about splitting the tab three ways?

As far as GUC’s direct liability for the coal ash spill, that actually ended when it sold its 16-percent ownership share in its Roxboro and Mayo power plants, GUC General Manager Tony Cannon said this week during a visit with The Daily Reflector’s editorial board.

That's what happens when you

That's what happens when you let the idiots at EPA tell companies what to do instead of simply stating what they shall not do and what the fine is when they do it.

Dan River coal ash

Duke Energy is responsible for proper storage and disposal of waste from their operation. Since their engineers and management did not store nor dispose of this waste properly Duke Energy is solely responsible for all costs of corrective action as well as any penalties which apply. Duke Energy made the deal to provide power in a correct and responsible manner they apparently did not do so in a responsible manner therefore they are liable for the clean-up as well as all costs and penalties regardless of what their management and political supporters may say. The customer has already paid for the power provided,Duke Energy and investors and employees made their money. Now they can clean-up the mess they left behind due to poor management and slipshod engineering and maintenance.

Clearly the Reflector is in bed with GUC

First, the DR met with the manager of a city department without either the general managers boss- the city manager- or an elected official. So whatever nonsense Cannon spouted is not official. Second, what Canon expresses is pure conjecture. He has no idea how much Duke will include in the wholesale rate anymore than he knows what electric rates will be 3 years from now. So why the DR is grilling him on any future rates is pure fantasy. How much is gas at the pump going to be, Tony.... You have no idea and won't know until then. Tony is only trying to justify his ill conceived and asinine Rate Stabilization Fund. With Duke not increasing rates in 2016 , Tony has already been caught in a lie and he is trying to get out of it with this coal ash nonsense. The DR , in its ignorance, falls right in line----------------------- And we wonder why Madoff had a 50 Billion dollar Ponzi scheme for 20 years

I agree we all should pay including the utility

For those of you who think burning fossil fuels is the think to do because they are cheap need to pay attention. Fossil fuels are cheap when you don't count the cost of disposal. Up to now we just dumped the waste on land, in the water, or in the air. There are hidden costs associated with each and it seems the bill is due. Alt energy is the way to go when ever possible. We could do so much more.
