ATLANTA — As an educator, Ron Clark has always been a bit of a wizard.

Even before he became a best-selling author and nationally known speaker, even before he opened his own school in Atlanta, Clark seemed to have an almost supernatural ability to captivate children — sometimes through song and dance performed on top of a desk.

The eastern North Carolina native and 1994 graduate of East Carolina University was the youngest teacher ever to be named Beaufort County Teacher of the Year and went on to become Disney American Teacher of the Year in 2000. A 2001 inductee into ECU’s Educators Hall of Fame, he became the subject of a made-for-TV movie in 2006 and in between wrote two books on teaching, one of which sold more than 1 million copies. (Clark published a third book in 2011.)
