Firefighters charged with shooting fixture

Two Red Oak Fire Department firefighters, one of whom also is a Greenville Fire-Rescue employee, were charged Wednesday in connection with an Aug. 11 firearm discharge that downed a public power fixture and left 16,000 GUC customers temporarily without electricity, a sheriff's official said.

Red Oak Chief James Bryant Beddard and Justin Stargardt were charged with felony injury to electric power fixtures. Beddard, also an EMS specialist at Greenville Fire-Rescue since 2006, additionally was charged with misdemeanor setting fire to woods, land and fields, according to records at the Pitt County Detention Center.

Pitt County sheriff's officials did not respond to several attempts Wednesday to learn of details surrounding the charges.
