ROCKY MOUNT — As much as eastern North Carolinians enjoy barbecue, a little competition to see who makes the best only seems natural.

More than 50 teams from seven states gathered Saturday for a national barbecue cook-off as part of the seventh annual Eastern Carolina BBQ Throwdown. The event was an official N.C. State Barbecue and a Kansas City Barbeque Society-sanctioned competition sponsored by the Rocky Mount Parks & Recreation Special Events Division. It was judged in Kansas City Barbeque Society categories of chicken, pork ribs, and pork and beef brisket.

The People’s Choice competition allowed visitors to exchange tickets for samples and judge barbecue from participating teams.
