A stabbing at J.H. Rose on Monday nearly killed a student and came close to severing his spine, the Pitt County District Attorney said during a bond hearing on Thursday. Johnavan Spell sneaked a butcher knife with a 12-inch blade into the school on Monday morning, put gloves on his hands, followed Daekwon Daniels through the halls and ran at Daniels from behind before stabbing him in the neck, Kimberly Robb said at Pitt County District Court.

Daniels would have been killed, or his spinal cord severed, but the knife hit a bone, she told Judge David Leech. The entire incident was captured on video, which Robb showed to Leech and defense attorneys. Leech set a bond for Spell of $175,000 and required Spell to remain under electronic monitoring and house arrest upon release.

Spell, 17, was attacked by Daniels and other youths on Friday, and officials have said Spell on Monday was retaliating. Robb said Thursday that Spell was jumped as he was leaving school. The attackers had fled when police arrived on the scene, she said, and Spell was not cooperative.

DONT RUSH TO JUDGE!

NONE OF US KNOW THE REAL REASONS BEHIND THIS YOUNG MANS ACTIONS AND I HOPE ONE DAY HE WILL HAVE A CHANCE TO TELL HIS STORY....I GREW IN NY I SEEN A LOT OF FIGHTS, MURDERS, AND STABBINGS THROUGHOUT MY YEARS AND WHILE I DONT CONDONE HIS ACTIONS I DO THINK THERE WAS A REASON WHY HE REACTED THE WAY HE DID....HE ACTIONS SEEM LIKE THE ACTIONS OF SOMEONE THAT WAS AFFRAID OR JUST FED UP AND COULD NOT TAKE IT ANYMORE.....THERE WILL BE MORE TO THIS STORY AND I CANT WAIT TO HEAR IT.......YOU ARE NOT THE JUDGE, JURY, OR GOD DONT JUDGE HIM....PRAY FOR HIM AND THE OTHER YOUNG MAN THAT WAS INJURED!

reasons behind his actions?

The reasons are obvious, it's because he's a violent thug with no regard for human life, but he'll get a chance to tell his story before a judge & jury, then he's going to state prison for attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill & inflicting serious injury, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a weapon on school property, etc. etc. etc...

Though unjustified, there has to be a reason

I know this kid as his substitute school teacher and have had him in my class on a number of occasions, and not once has he ever given me a hard time at all. He is very reserved and doesn't bother anyone. For him to take a knife to school and stab someone is very out of character for him. I sympathize with his plight, but will not fail to vouch for his character, He really is a nice boy.

He's so nice he attacked another student from behind & stabbed him in the neck with a 12" butcher knife

Did I miss something

I did not see any reference to bullying in the article. Did I miss something? Then you have to ask is Bullying a reason to be stabbed? Seems a little over kill (parton the pun) I also noticed the article said he violated the elctronic monitoring law. Was the suspect convicted of something prior to this that caused him to be elctronically monitored?

What a joke.

What a joke.

he bothers no one?

He did with a knife. I'd say that he bothered some one. Mom needs a dose of reality.
