The fact that South Central is the last seed in this week’s Pitt County holiday basketball tournament is the best proof of this field being the most balanced and unpredictable it has been in years.
The Falcons’ boys’ program has won the holiday tourney the last three years and is only two years removed from a 3-A state runner-up finish. SC has been a dominant force in the last few holiday events, but a clear-cut favorite is missing from this installment of the yearly tradition.
When the coaches met earlier this month to determine the bracket, SC and Ayden-Grifton — the only 1-A team in the county — tied for the same amount of points. A-G won a coin flip to earn the No. 5 seed and thus give South Central the sixth spot.
