Woodward: ECU record flawed

2 Comments | Leave a Comment

East Carolina women’s basketball set a program record* for single-game home attendance — 5,408 — on Friday against Presbyterian thanks to its Education Day event.

It was a great opportunity for the local school children who packed Minges Coliseum, and ECU’s plethora of personnel, along with the many teachers, did a great job during the game that had a rare tip-off time of 11:30 a.m. to accommodate the kids. Their energy was infectious and carried over to the Pirate players, who did their part with an easy 84-57 win against an overmatched opponent.

But it shouldn’t be advertised as a record-breaking event for attendance, especially for this undefeated and pretty entertaining team that is on the verge of taking the next step in legitimacy on the national scale. Promotions like Education Day, when most of the attendees were there involuntarily and did not pay to enter, should not count for attendance records.

Hard up for sports news ?

I can see a note attached to another story mentioning this numbers game but the sports page headlines ? Story is not important enough to overshadow the women's basketball game yesterday which it did. Anybody editing there on Sunday nights ?
