RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina is recognizing the talent of a jazz legend and native son with a highway historical marker.

A marker honoring Thelonious Monk is scheduled for dedication on Friday in Rocky Mount. The dedication is part of the town's weekend Harambee Festival, which will include speakers, seminars and a jazz concert.

In addition, the area will also be named Thelonious Monk Plaza. Monk was born in Rocky Mount.

Monk's third copyrighted composition, "Round Midnight," is the most recorded jazz standard of all time. Along with Dizzy Gillepsie, he is credited with being an architect of the bebop jazz style.
