ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) — Buncombe County schools are considering taking advantage of a federal program that would pay for a free breakfast for all students.

The Asheville Citizen-Times reports (http://avlne.ws/JlZE0M ) that the school board will discuss the idea at its meeting next month.

Officials say children often aren't hungry when they first get up, but end up wanting food by the time they get to school. And educators say a good breakfast can help improve students' concentration throughout the day.

The breakfasts will be paid for through reimbursements from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Nearby Transylvania County has been offering a free breakfast to its students for 10 years. About 75 percent of students take part in the program, which brings breakfast to their classrooms through eighth grade.
